Fans turned out in their droves to support singer Celine Dion and pay their respects to her late husband René Angélil at an open casket visitation in Montreal. Final respects to Rene were paid at the Notre-Dame Basilica, where he and Celine wed in 1994.
Fans filled the streets outside the church and Celine personally welcomed the fans once inside. She was supported by her son Rene-Charles and her mother, 88-year-old Therese. It was an open casket ceremony for mourners to say their last goodbyes to the well-loved 73-year-old, the day before the official funeral is due to take place.
Having been touched by the turn-out, Celine told People magazine: ‘The support we’ve received has been such a blessing.’ During the time of Rene lying in state, Celine was seen greeting well-wishers and mourners, often spending several minutes with strangers who’d queued to pay tribute. The 47-year-old was reportedly only supposed to stay for half an hour, but was there into the night speaking with fans.
She was seen in tears several times as the visitation took place. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard last week announced Rene would be laid to rest in a national funeral, MailOnline reports: ‘We were all touched by the death of René Angélil. Quebecers will have a chance to pay tribute to a man who had an impact on the cultural landscape of our nation.’
The full state funeral will take place today, and Celine has told fans on her Facebook page that his funeral will be live-streamed. See more photos below...
