Woman faces court charged with using sledgehammer and carving knife to kill six-month-old granddaughter she was babysitting

A Chicago woman is accused of murdering her six-month-old grandchild using a sledgehammer and a carving knife

Alfreda Giedrojc is said to have repeatedly hit Vivian Summers in the head and body after which she slit her throat.

The 61-year-oldm originally from Poland, had been left alone with Vivian while her husband Bill and their son-in-law left to help a family member with household repairs.

Vivian had been asleep on the sofa in her grandparents home in Oak Lawn, a suburb to Chicago, Illinois, when Giedrojc went to fetch a sledgehammer which she had hidden in her closet the night before.

Placing the infant on the floor, Giedrojc repeatedly hit Vivian over the head and body with the hammer and when the child did not die, Giedrojc picked her up and slit her throat with a carving knife taken from her kitchen.
